In an impactful decision, Formula One has announced that starting from the 2024 season, the bonus point awarded to the driver who sets the fastest lap in a grand prix will be scrapped. This move comes as part of changes to the sporting and technical regulations for 2024 and 2025, recently approved by the World Motor Sport Council.
Since 2019, drivers were awarded an additional point for setting the fastest lap if they finished in the top 10, a rule that often added intrigue to the final stages of races. However, the practice has been met with mixed reactions due to its strategic implications and potential controversies.
One notable instance of this rule in action was during the Singapore Grand Prix, where Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing opted for a late pit stop to secure the fastest lap in a bid to gain an additional point. Despite his effort, Ricciardo fell outside the top 10, thus missing out on the valuable point. This strategic move inadvertently benefited his teammate, Max Verstappen, by denying the point to rival Lando Norris of McLaren.
With Norris currently trailing Verstappen in the championship standings, the importance of fastest lap points in the title battle has been evident. Norris has capitalized on this rule, securing fastest laps in multiple races this season. However, critics argue that the bonus point does not always reflect pure speed but rather strategic decision-making.
Among other changes, the FIA also announced an increase in the requirement for fielding young drivers during free practice sessions. Teams will now be obligated to give young drivers two opportunities per car per season, as opposed to the current once-per-season limit.
As discussions around F1 regulations continue to evolve, the removal of the fastest lap bonus point signifies a significant shift in the sport's competitive landscape. While some drivers and teams may see this change as a loss of strategy, others like Sauber's Valtteri Bottas believe it's a step in the right direction towards promoting fair competition and minimizing strategic biases. With the upcoming season set to bring new dynamics to Formula One, the elimination of the fastest lap bonus point is sure to impact race strategies and championship battles in unforeseen ways.
