A remarkable winter storm swept through the U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday, unleashing heavy snowfall, ice accumulation, and fierce wind gusts in a region where such wintry conditions are a rarity. As the storm made its way eastward, the sight of snow-covered highways and deserted downtown streets near Houston greeted residents and visitors alike.

In the heart of Houston, a city unaccustomed to such snowfall, few dared to brave the elements as restaurants and bars remained closed, and the usual hustle and bustle of the metropolis was replaced by a tranquil white landscape. The Houston metro rail stood almost deserted, with passengers scarce. With schools shut down for Tuesday and Wednesday, the city braced itself for an estimated four inches of snowfall.

"I've lived in Texas all my life, and this level of snow is unprecedented," remarked Ishan Bhaidani, a local business owner, reflecting on the unusual weather phenomenon. While Houston grappled with the winter wonderland, two possible weather-related deaths were under investigation by authorities, underscoring the seriousness of the storm's impact.

The unexpected snowfall extended further south, with New Orleans also experiencing a rare eight-inch accumulation, potentially matching a record from over a century ago. The city warned residents to stay indoors as strong winds whipped the falling snow, creating challenging conditions on the roads.

The storm's trajectory was set to traverse Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida in the coming days, with Mobile, Alabama expecting up to five inches of snow – an event not witnessed in over six decades. A snowstorm warning encompassed 31 million individuals across the southern U.S., prompting flight cancellations and delays at major airports in the region.

As temperatures plummeted well below freezing, concerns of frostbite and burst water pipes loomed large. With snow, ice, and powerful winds posing threats to infrastructure and safety, authorities urged residents to take precautions. In southeastern Texas, power outages affected thousands of homes and businesses, while ports and pilot operations were temporarily halted.

Meanwhile, in the eastern U.S., an Arctic front maintained a frigid grip, with Chicago, Cleveland, and New York City shivering in single-digit temperatures. The coldest spot in the nation registered a bone-chilling -39 degrees Fahrenheit near Grand Lake, Colorado, emphasizing the widespread impact of the winter weather across the country.
