Ford has recently revealed its latest creation, the Ford Mustang GTD, a beast of a car boasting an impressive 800-horsepower engine. Set to hit the market in late 2024 or early 2025, this high-performance vehicle comes with a price tag starting at around $300,000. But there's more to this Mustang than just its powerhouse engine.
The Ford Mustang GTD takes inspiration from its racing counterpart, the Mustang GT3. Ford aimed to bring the racing experience to the streets, challenging Europe's elite sports cars. This underdog approach is rooted in Ford's longstanding desire to prove its worth against European automakers, a rivalry dating back to the epic Le Mans races in the 1960s.
Unlike the GT models where the engine is positioned behind the seats, the Mustang GTD adheres to the traditional design of the Mustang with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine located up front. While sacrificing practicality, Ford has focused on achieving remarkable speed and handling. This meant forgoing features typically found in a daily driver, such as a trunk. In place of a trunk, the space houses a specialized cooler for the gearbox and machinery required for the advanced adjustable suspension system.
The body of the Mustang GTD is predominantly constructed from carbon fiber and includes active aerodynamic features to enhance road grip at high speeds. Notably, a massive wing is mounted off the sides of the rear window. To optimize performance, Ford eliminated the back seats to save weight, allowing for optimal weight distribution necessary for exceptional cornering. The car's eight-speed gearbox is located at the rear, contributing to the ideal front-to-rear weight balance.
While the Mustang GTD is road-legal, it's not your average car for daily chores. Every detail has been optimized for performance. Ford's production will begin at its Flat Rock facility in Michigan, alongside other two-door Mustangs. However, the partially finished cars will be transported to Multimatic, a specialist automotive company based in Canada, for final assembly. This collaboration with Multimatic, which also works on the Mustang GT3 race car, showcases Ford's dedication to pushing boundaries and continuously improving their vehicles.
Ford aims to leverage the knowledge gained from the Mustang GTD's development to enhance their mainstream products. As with previous endeavors, the technology, insights, and lessons learned from this remarkable sports car will be utilized across Ford's wider production lineup. The Mustang GTD not only represents a remarkable feat of engineering and performance but also serves as a testament to Ford's relentless pursuit of excellence and the desire to surpass its European counterparts.
