Two-time grand slam champion Simona Halep has been handed a four-year ban for violating anti-doping rules, as announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Tuesday. However, Halep has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and has expressed her intention to appeal the decision, stating that she has "never knowingly or intentionally used any prohibited substance." She remains determined to clear her name and return to the tennis court.

Halep, a former world No. 1, won the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019. She was charged with two separate breaches of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. The first charge relates to her testing positive for roxadustat, a banned substance listed on the 2022 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List, during the US Open last year. Roxadustat is a type of drug known as HIF-stabilizing agents, which can boost an athlete's red blood cell count and enhance endurance performance, as per the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

The second charge against Halep relates to irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport (ABP), which is designed to monitor specific biological variables over time. The ITIA stated that while it accepted Halep's argument that she had taken a contaminated supplement, the volume she had ingested could not have resulted in the concentration of roxadustat found in her positive sample. However, the ABP charge was upheld, with the tribunal expressing trust in the unanimous opinion of three independent experts from the Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU), who believed that the irregularities in Halep's profile indicated "likely doping."

The ITIA has backdated Halep's suspension to October 7, 2022, and it will run until October 6, 2026. The case is subject to appeal. Halep, who has been under suspension since October 2022, expressed her disappointment with the tribunal's decision in a statement, calling the past year the "hardest match" of her life. She revealed that she had adjusted her nutritional supplements before the 2022 hard-court season, ensuring none of the listed ingredients contained prohibited substances. However, one of the supplements was contaminated with roxadustat. Halep emphasized that she had been tested regularly after her initial positive test, and all subsequent tests came back negative.

In her statement, Halep expressed gratitude for the support she has received from her friends, family, and fans. She intends to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and pursue legal action against the supplement company involved. Speaking on behalf of Halep, her former coach Patrick Mouratoglou expressed shock at the decision and believes that the four-year ban, if upheld, could effectively mark the end of her career. He hopes that the CAS will review the case fairly and ultimately vindicate Halep.
