President Mohamed Muizzu, during a meeting with Indian minister Kiren Rijiju, formally requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, while acknowledging their role in assisting Maldivian citizens. This demand further intensifies the ongoing struggle between India and China for influence in the archipelago, strategically located along important shipping routes in the Indian Ocean. Over the years, successive Maldivian governments have shown a leaning towards either of the two Asian powerhouses, which have heavily invested in the country's infrastructure and provided substantial loans.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has declined to comment on the discussions, while Muizzu's office has not responded to requests for comment. Currently, approximately 70 Indian military personnel are stationed in the Maldives, operating radar stations and surveillance aircraft. Indian warships also help patrol the Maldivian exclusive economic zone, while their helicopters and aircraft on the island are available for medical evacuations.

Muizzu, who leads a party that welcomes Chinese loans, has expressed concerns about India's growing influence and accused his predecessor, Ibrahim Solih, of allowing India unchecked sway over the country's affairs. The move to station Indian troops was seen by Muizzu as surrendering sovereignty. However, India's presence has also been essential in countering security threats, maintaining surveillance, and providing assistance during natural disasters.

The United States and its allies, including Japan and Australia, have been actively supporting India as a regional counterweight against China. These countries have invested significantly in strengthening ties with India in order to balance China's assertive and assured stance in the region. Solih, Muizzu's predecessor, worked to bring the Maldives closer to India during his time in office.

As the discussions continue, it remains to be seen how the issue of Indian troops in the Maldives will be resolved. The outcome will not only impact India's presence in the region but also shape the power dynamics between India and China in their ongoing struggle for influence in the Indian Ocean.
