TikTok has officially launched its new e-commerce venture, TikTok Shop, in the United States. The popular short-form video platform announced the introduction of an in-app shopping experience on Tuesday, following months of testing. TikTok Shop allows users to not only discover but also directly purchase products featured in live videos, as well as those tagged in content displayed on their personalized For You page, pinned on brand profiles, or promoted in the new "Shop" tab.

This new feature not only benefits the users by providing them with a seamless shopping experience within the app, but it also presents a new opportunity for creators to generate income. Through commission-based marketing partnerships with brands, creators have the potential to earn revenue through the products they promote in their TikTok content. Additionally, TikTok is offering a program called "Fulfilled by TikTok," which takes care of all the logistics for sellers including storage, packaging, and shipping.

TikTok aims to significantly increase its merchandise sales to reach $20 billion by the end of this year, quadrupling its current level, according to reports. The platform's move into live e-commerce comes at a time when other social media platforms have struggled with their own online shopping initiatives. Instagram, owned by Meta, discontinued its livestream product tagging and shopping features earlier this year, while Facebook got rid of its live shopping feature. YouTube, on the other hand, partnered with Shopify to help creators sell their products.

While TikTok Shop is already available in parts of Asia and the United Kingdom, it has yet to establish itself as a major e-commerce source in those markets. Despite its large user base, TikTok faces fierce competition from well-established players like Shopee, Lazada, and Tokopedia. In Southeast Asia alone, e-commerce transactions reached nearly $100 billion in 2021, with the largest share coming from Indonesia. TikTok facilitated $4.4 billion of transactions in the region in the same year, but it still trailed behind Shopee's $48 billion in regional merchandise sales.

Cracking the US market has proven to be a challenge for TikTok. The TikTok Shop feature has been in testing since November and the platform previously made unsuccessful attempts to enter the US e-commerce scene. However, the renewed effort to revitalize its e-retail initiatives comes at a time when TikTok is facing increased scrutiny from US lawmakers due to concerns about national security. Despite these challenges, TikTok remains a popular platform for creators and users alike, and the addition of TikTok Shop offers a promising opportunity for both commerce and content.
