Volkswagen AG is facing setbacks in its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions as new orders fail to meet the company's targets in the third quarter. This underperformance has been attributed to weaker global demand for EVs and European customers' reluctance to embrace battery-powered cars. Hildegard Wortmann, the sales overseer for Volkswagen, expressed disappointment, citing lower-than-expected market trends as the primary reason for the lower order intake.

As a consequence of the sluggish demand, Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker, has had to revise its goals for EV sales. Originally targeting 11% of total sales, the company now aims for EVs to constitute between 8% and 10% of overall sales this year. To accommodate the downturn, Volkswagen has taken measures such as laying off temporary workers and implementing shifts cuts in its German factories.

In its bid to compete with companies like Tesla and emerging low-cost Chinese EV manufacturers, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has been focusing on reducing costs and improving efficiency across the brand. This endeavor is essential as Volkswagen aims to have EVs account for half of its total sales by 2030. However, this transition presents significant challenges for the automaker.

While VW experienced a decline in deliveries in China by 5.8% during the third quarter, sales in Europe and North America managed to offset this downturn. Ralf Brandstaetter, head of VW China, expressed optimism, expecting sales in Asia to improve in the coming months with the introduction of the all-electric ID.7 model in the market during the second half of the year.

The road ahead for Volkswagen is filled with obstacles as it grapples with subdued demand and the need for significant cost reductions. Nevertheless, the company remains dedicated to its EV goals. By adapting to market conditions, optimizing its operations, and introducing new models, Volkswagen hopes to regain momentum in the EV market and increase its market share in the rapidly growing segment.
