German carmaker Porsche has unveiled an updated version of its popular Cayenne SUV at the Shanghai auto show. The revamped Cayenne, which starts at €89,097 ($99,419), features more powerful engines, an updated chassis and a new interior with displays for both the driver and front passenger. The new model is also available as a plug-in hybrid and will compete with increasingly luxurious battery models from Chinese automakers as parent company Volkswagen AG pushes ahead with its EV plans.

Porsche, Europe's most valuable carmaker after last year's highly successful initial public offering, is currently navigating a complicated transition to electric vehicles. However, software issues have delayed the launch of the battery-powered Macan until next year. While Porsche won't unveil its first all-electric Cayenne until the second half of the decade, debuting the overhauled SUV in Shanghai is likely an attempt to defend sales in China, the company's biggest single market, where deliveries declined by 2% last year amid Covid lockdowns and competition from domestic EV brands BYD Co. and Nio Inc.

The updated Cayenne comes in several iterations, including a powerful Turbo GT that can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in just 3.3 seconds. The hybrid version, which starts at €103,344, features a larger battery that extends the SUV's purely electric range to 90 km. Porsche introduced the Cayenne in 2002 to expand its product range beyond sports cars, and it has since become one of the company's most important models. While Porsche is still best known for the iconic 911, larger four-door vehicles like the Panamera, Macan and Cayenne have become crucial to the company's lineup, with the latter outselling all other Porsche models last year.

Porsche has also had success with the battery-only Taycan and is currently working on an all-electric high-performance SUV, codenamed K1, which will be positioned above the Cayenne. While Porsche's shift to EVs may be complicated, the updated Cayenne is a clear indication that the company is committed to keeping its popular SUV fresh and competitive in the face of rising competition from domestic Chinese automakers.
