Turkey's defense capabilities received a significant boost as a Turkish stealth drone powered by a Ukrainian engine completed its debut flight. Developed by state-owned Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and equipped with an engine from Ukraine's Ivchenko-Progress, the ANKA-3 drone showcased its advanced technology and capabilities during the flight. The drone reached an altitude of 8,000 feet and achieved speeds of 150 knots during the hour-long test, impressing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who shared a video of the milestone.

TAI had kept the development of the ANKA-3 under wraps until recently, with the first official photos of the drone released in March of this year. An engineer involved in the project disclosed that the actual design work began in early 2022. The secrecy surrounding the development highlights Turkey's commitment to expanding its drone technology capabilities, a field in which the country has already made significant progress with the Bayraktar TB2 drones developed by private company Baykar, co-run by Erdogan's son-in-law.

The ANKA-3 is primarily designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and combat missions, according to TAI's website. It boasts an impressive operational range, with the ability to fly at altitudes of up to 40,000 feet and remain airborne for up to 10 hours while carrying a payload of 1,200 kilograms. This extended flight endurance gives the drone increased flexibility to perform multiple missions without being easily detected.

Aviation expert Kubilay Yilmaz highlighted the ANKA-3's long flight duration as a key advantage, stating that its ability to repeatedly travel to target points without being detected by modern air defense system radars makes it a formidable asset. This extended operational capability could prove vital in various scenarios where extended surveillance and persistence are crucial.

Drones have become a cornerstone of President Erdogan's push to strengthen Turkey's defense industry, particularly in modernizing its aging air force. The successful debut of the ANKA-3 further emphasizes Turkey's commitment to becoming a major player in drone technology. In addition to the ANKA-3, Turkey is also set to witness the maiden flight of its domestically produced fighter jet, Kaan, in January, further solidifying its position as an emerging force in the aerospace sector.

With Turkey's investment in drone technology and its growing indigenous defense capabilities, the country is poised to have a significant impact on regional security dynamics and establish itself as a prominent exporter of advanced unmanned systems. The successful flight of the ANKA-3 marks another milestone in Turkey's journey towards becoming a major player in the global defense industry.
