Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne has announced his resignation amidst ongoing scrutiny and allegations of flaws in his scientific research. The decision comes after an investigation into his work, prompted by a teenage student's investigation, revealed instances of research data manipulation within his lab.

While a special committee, including a federal judge, did not find evidence of fraud or fabrication of scientific data by Tessier-Lavigne himself, it did uncover instances of data manipulation conducted by members of his lab. In a letter addressing the findings, Tessier-Lavigne expressed regret for not being more diligent in seeking corrections and took responsibility for the actions of his lab members.

Tessier-Lavigne, a respected neuroscientist known for his expertise in brain and spinal cord research, joined Stanford as president in 2016. His work has primarily focused on understanding and treating degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as well as developing therapies for spinal cord injuries. Prior to his tenure at Stanford, he held the position of chief science officer at Genentech Inc.

The initial questions surrounding Tessier-Lavigne's research were raised by the Stanford Daily, the university's student newspaper. The publication, led by student journalist Theo Baker, was recognized with a George Polk award for its investigative reporting on the matter.

Following the allegations, a special committee formed by Stanford's Board of Trustees commenced a thorough review of Tessier-Lavigne's research and the papers he authored or coauthored. As a result of this review, Tessier-Lavigne has announced his intention to retract or correct five of his papers.

Tessier-Lavigne's resignation is set to take effect at the end of August, and he will continue to serve as a member of the Stanford faculty. The university's board of trustees, led by Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, has appointed Richard Saller as interim president, starting in September.

Saller, a Classics professor, has stated that, as an interim president, he does not have grand plans but intends to carry on the initiatives started by Tessier-Lavigne.

Despite the controversy surrounding Tessier-Lavigne's tenure, it is important to note that he has been hailed as a successful fundraiser for the university, particularly among influential figures in Silicon Valley. His efforts have contributed to initiatives such as the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, which was established with a $1.1 billion gift from venture capitalist John Doerr in 2022.

Stanford University, located in Palo Alto, has enjoyed significant achievements over the years, driven by its close ties to Silicon Valley, selective undergraduate admissions, and pioneering research. The university boasts an impressive endowment exceeding $36 billion and has produced numerous Nobel laureates. However, recent scandals involving individuals associated with the institution, such as Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos and Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX, have tarnished its reputation.
