AutoNation Inc., one of the largest car dealership chains in the US, is facing a decline in car prices and increasing margin pressures. The company's CEO, Mike Manley, expressed his belief that car prices will continue to decrease as inventory grows, which is a positive development for consumers but a cause for concern for dealers whose profit margins are being squeezed.

In the second quarter, AutoNation witnessed a sharp drop of 25% in gross profit on each new vehicle sold. This can be attributed to automakers offering discounts as they replenish their supplies that were depleted during the pandemic. The aim of these deals is to make cars more affordable and stimulate sales in an uncertain economic climate.

Manley acknowledged that prices are clearly coming down and expects margin compression to persist. However, he does not believe it will reach pre-pandemic levels, at least not this year. This aligns with the views expressed by Carvana Co. CEO, Ernie Garcia III, who anticipates the continuation of a slide in used-car prices.

The deflation in pricing is expected to drive up demand after the pandemic-related parts shortages depleted dealer lots and drove up the average price of a new car to almost $50,000. The increase in incentives and the shift towards leasing are all aimed at improving affordability and maintaining momentum in the new-vehicle market, according to Manley.

To offset the profit shortfalls in new and used car sales, AutoNation is focusing on increasing income from its repair, financing, and insurance units. Manley emphasized the importance of remaining agile on pricing, particularly for used cars, and stated that while there may be fluctuations in margin, the company aims to secure quality business and its fair share of the market.

Overall, AutoNation and Carvana's experiences reflect a trend of declining car prices and increasing margin pressures in the industry. While this is good news for consumers, it poses challenges for dealers who must adapt and find innovative ways to maintain profitability in this evolving landscape.
