In a surprising move that has left the high-end watch retailing world astounded, the secretive 87-year-old Swiss billionaire Jörg G. Bucherer has agreed to sell Bucherer AG, the renowned luxury watch and jewelry retailer, to Rolex. For over a century, three generations of Bucherers have built an exclusive empire, catering to the global elite with their exquisite timepieces and dazzling gems. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, and since neither company publishes financial results, estimating the value of the transaction is challenging.

Industry analysts estimate that Bucherer's annual sales, from its 100+ stores, amount to around 2 billion Swiss francs ($2.3 billion), providing an enterprise value of up to 4 billion Swiss francs. They also suggest that Bucherer's sales account for approximately 5% of Rolex's overall revenue. The decision made by the 87-year-old Bucherer to relinquish control of his closely-held family business has caught many off guard, particularly due to the intense secrecy surrounding him and the close intertwining history of the two luxury brands. In a statement, Rolex revealed that Bucherer's choice was made "in the absence of direct descendants."

This acquisition marks a strategic shift for Rolex, as it will now have a significant presence in consumer sales, moving away from its reliance on external distributors. Currently, Rolex only owns and operates a single store in Geneva, its home city. However, the deal still awaits approval from authorities before it can be finalized. The transaction takes place during what UBS Group AG has labeled as the largest transfer of wealth in history, as aging founders and investors consider the future of their businesses. The ultimate destination for the proceeds of the sale remains unknown, as representatives from Bucherer declined to provide any further details.

What is evident is that the sale will terminate dynastic control over the renowned luxury watch and jewelry retailer, which offers iconic brands such as Rolex, Carl F. Bucherer (its own brand), Chopard, and Blancpain. The company's origins can be traced back to 1888 when Carl-Friedrich Bucherer and his wife Luise opened a store in Lucerne. Their sons, Ernst and Carl Eduard, joined the business in the early 1920s, with Ernst forging a partnership with Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf in 1924. This partnership led to Rolex becoming part of the Bucherer product line. Jörg Bucherer, the third generation, assumed management in 1977, expanding the company's reach into Austria in the 1980s and Germany in the 1990s. Bucherer further expanded into international markets, establishing flagship stores in Paris in 2013 and making inroads into London, Copenhagen, and the US.

Jörg Bucherer, a highly private individual, has never granted a media interview, and mention of him on the company's website is minimal. A French corporate filing identifies him as a Swiss national. Rolex's founder, Hans Wilsdorf, a German-born entrepreneur, established a foundation in Geneva in 1945 that assumed ownership of the company. Wilsdorf passed away in 1960 without any direct descendants.

Interestingly, Rolex highlights that Jörg Bucherer is the last individual still active in the industry who had the opportunity to know and work alongside Hans Wilsdorf. The statement from Rolex confirms that Bucherer will retain the honorary role of the retailer's president, solidifying the enduring connection between the two luxury brands.
