Audi’s ever-growing model range can indeed be a little confusing to navigate, but amidst the sea of sedans and SUVs, the new Audi SQ8 E-Tron stands out as an electric powerhouse that is definitely worth considering. Priced at $89,800, this five-passenger SUV offers improved driving performance, an elegant interior, and impressive battery capabilities, making it an attractive option in the electric vehicle market.
The Audi SQ8 E-Tron may not possess the sportiness of its RS counterparts or the cool factor of the Allroad wagons, but it does offer the highest level of performance among Audi's electric SUV lineup. I had the opportunity to drive a Sportback variant in Prestige trim, which came equipped with luxurious features like power soft-closing doors, digital matrix-design LED headlights, and park assist. With a total cost of $105,740 as tested, this version maintains the same performance specifications and interior layout as its basic counterpart.
Audi has been under pressure to revitalize its model lineup and introduce exciting new electric vehicles. According to an Audi spokesperson, the brand will be launching electric versions of the A6 sedan and Q6 SUV next year, both of which will be built on the same electric platform co-developed with Porsche. Furthermore, Audi has announced that it aims to exclusively sell electric vehicles by 2033.
Visually, the SQ8 E-Tron exudes a sense of power and sophistication. With its flared fenders, aerodynamically optimized front end, and a wider stance, it looks more chiseled and assertive compared to its siblings. Audi enthusiasts will notice the newly stylized four-ring badging and redesigned logos, further adding to its appeal.
One notable aspect of the SQ8 E-Tron is its dual charging ports, each located on either side of the vehicle. This design allows owners to choose between using a Level 2 charger or a fast-charger, providing flexibility and convenience. Additionally, Audi offers two years of unlimited free charging, along with all-season tires and 20-inch wheels as standard.
While it’s essential to note that the SQ8 E-Tron is not designed for racetrack performance, it does offer substantial power and capabilities for an SUV. Its three electric motors deliver a combined output of 496 horsepower, which can be further boosted with a special mode. This translates to 94 horsepower and 228 foot-pounds of torque more than the standard Q8, resulting in a quick 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 130mph.
During my test drive through winding roads, I found the SQ8 E-Tron to feel solid and balanced, thanks to its 50% stiffer underpinnings compared to its predecessor. The braking system inspired confidence, even on steep declines, while the two rear motors and electric torque vectoring contributed to unexpected agility for an SUV with ample cargo space of up to 54 cubic feet. Furthermore, the standard four-wheel air suspension and Level 2 autonomous driving system enhance the overall driving experience.
Moving into the cabin, the SQ8 E-Tron offers a calm and refreshed atmosphere. Unlike some electric vehicles from competitors, Audi has opted for a less cluttered approach with a better layout of controls. The inclusion of diamond quilted seats and a panoramic sunroof adds a touch of luxury. While some may have differing opinions on the diamond stitching, the overall interior design and comfort are noteworthy.
In terms of its battery and charging capabilities, the SQ8 E-Tron may not be the most glamorous contender. Its driving range is limited to 253 miles on a full charge, achieved with the standard 20-inch wheels. Opting for larger rims will reduce the battery life. However, the vehicle can charge from 10% to 80% in just 31 minutes at a public DC fast charger, which aligns with industry standards for luxury electric SUVs.
Despite not indulging in any exhilarating maneuvers during my test drive, it was evident that the SQ8 E-Tron offers a quiet and serene driving experience. The standard dual-pane acoustic window glass effectively minimizes external noise, contributing to the overall tranquility inside the cabin.
The Audi SQ8 E-Tron manages to justify its price tag with its upgraded electric capabilities, generous standard features, and enhanced performance. While it may not be a track car or a vehicle for doing doughnuts, it stands as a compelling option for those seeking a high-performing and stylish SUV in the electric vehicle market.
