Amsterdam, widely known for its picturesque canals and bicycle-friendly culture, is about to see a significant change on its streets. Starting from Friday, the maximum driving speed on the majority of the city's roads will be reduced from 50 kilometers per hour (kph) to just 30 kph (less than 19 miles per hour). This move reflects Amsterdam's commitment to improving road safety, joining other European cities that have implemented similar measures.

The decision to lower the speed limits comes as Amsterdam strives to strike a balance between its growing population, increasing tourism, and limited real estate. In efforts to create more liveable neighborhoods, the city has previously launched campaigns like "Stay Away," aimed at addressing rowdy tourist behavior, and proposed restrictions on through-traffic in the central areas.

Amsterdam's decision to implement the new speed limits follows conversations with residents, revealing that two-thirds of them perceive the traffic in their neighborhoods as unsafe. With the city witnessing over three serious accidents on average every day, it is anticipated that the reduced speed limit could lead to a decline of up to 30% in such incidents, according to the municipality.

One of the key advantages highlighted by authorities is that the lower speed limit will alleviate traffic noise and provide drivers with more time to process information and respond to unexpected situations on the roads. To accommodate this change, around 4,500 new traffic signs have already been installed throughout Amsterdam. It is important to note that public transport, including trams and buses, will continue to operate at the previous speed limit of 50 kph, as they utilize dedicated tracks.

Despite the municipality's efforts to promote road safety, the decision to reduce speed limits has not been met with unanimous approval from locals. Criticism has emerged, portraying Amsterdam as a "crazy" city and likening the new speed limit to that typically assigned for mopeds, expressed by one disgruntled resident on social media.

Amsterdam is following in the footsteps of cities like Brussels, Paris, and Madrid, all of which have previously implemented reductions in road speeds. The municipality has also emphasized its plans to optimize traffic lights for improved traffic flow, highlighting that motorists in Brussels did not experience longer travel times following the speed limit adjustments implemented there in 2021.

In a recent ranking of urban mobility, Amsterdam was named the second-best city, after Helsinki. This recognition reinforces the city's commitment to creating safer and more sustainable transportation options for its residents and visitors alike. By reducing speed limits and prioritizing road safety, Amsterdam aims to enhance the overall livability and quality of its neighborhoods while accommodating the needs of its growing population.
