Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made a surprising decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, just two days before the New Hampshire primary. DeSantis, who has been trailing behind Republican frontrunners Donald Trump and Nikki Haley in the polls, cited a lack of a clear path to victory as the reason for his withdrawal. In a video released on X (formerly Twitter), DeSantis expressed his support for the eventual nominee and stated that Trump would be a preferable choice over Haley or President Joe Biden.
This announcement comes as a blow to DeSantis' political aspirations, considering that just two years ago, he won a landslide re-election as governor and was hailed by big-dollar GOP donors as the future of the party. However, recent polling from CNN and the University of New Hampshire showed DeSantis with only 6% of the state's Republican vote, while Trump secured 50% and Haley garnered 39%.
During a campaign stop, Haley addressed DeSantis' exit and applauded his efforts in the race. "I want to say to Ron, you ran a great race," she said, receiving cheers from the crowd. "It's now one fella and one lady left."
Some donors had hoped that DeSantis would maintain his political capital for a potential future presidential run in 2028 when Trump is no longer on the ballot. At the age of 45, DeSantis still has years ahead of him in the political arena.
DeSantis' campaign has been marred by internal conflicts, including disagreements over messaging and strategy between his campaign in Tallahassee and the main super PAC supporting him, Never Back Down. Additionally, leadership changes and financial difficulties plagued his operation. As his poll numbers declined, DeSantis was forced to lay off staffers and reshuffle key aides. Despite claiming to have enough funds to sustain his campaign until early March, doubts among donors grew following the Iowa caucuses, leading to further challenges.
In recent interviews, DeSantis expressed regret over his early media strategy, which focused on conservative outlets and bypassed mainstream media. He acknowledged that he should have engaged with a broader range of shows and platforms to increase his visibility.
As DeSantis exits the race, the political landscape will shift with Trump and Haley emerging as the two primary contenders for the Republican nomination. The upcoming New Hampshire primary will likely be a key indicator of their standing in the race.
Although DeSantis' campaign may have faltered this time around, his youth and political potential suggest that he might not be finished with the pursuit of higher office. For now, he pledges his support to the eventual Republican nominee and emphasizes the importance of unity within the party.
