Following a cyberattack that targeted software provider CDK Global, disrupting operations for around 15,000 auto retailers in North America, the company has initiated efforts to restore its systems. The disruption, which began on June 19, has forced dealerships to navigate challenges in conducting day-to-day business activities such as sales and service tasks.
CDK Global, one of the key software providers utilized by auto retailers, shut down its systems after the initial cyberattack was detected. Despite briefly restoring some services, a subsequent attack prompted another shutdown later that day. Dealers were informed last week that the outage might persist for several days. Bloomberg reported that the hackers were demanding a substantial sum, and there were indications that CDK Global was considering making the payment to alleviate the situation.
The service interruption has impacted sales and repair processes, with dealerships resorting to manual methods for tasks like appointment scheduling and credit checks. The situation has added strain during a time that would typically be busy with the US holiday and end-of-quarter activities. This disruption serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by businesses dependent on digital systems and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to mitigate such risks.
