In a bid to revamp its struggling brand, Mulberry Group Plc's new CEO, Andrea Baldo, has unveiled a strategy to make luxury handbags more accessible to a wider range of consumers. Baldo aims to ensure that 60% of the brand's products are priced below the iconic Bayswater bag, which retails for £1,095 ($1,383).

Recognizing the need to cater to customers seeking affordable luxury in the current market climate, Baldo believes that the company was previously pricing its products out of reach for many. By repositioning Mulberry as a value-for-market player in the luxury sector, he hopes to reinvigorate sales and appeal to a broader audience.

Mulberry's recent financial results reflected the challenges facing the brand, with a widened pretax loss of £15.7 million ($19.9 million) in the first half of the fiscal year. The Asia Pacific region, particularly China, experienced a significant decline in retail sales, indicating a tough period for high-end fashion brands.

To streamline operations and boost efficiency, Mulberry announced plans to cut approximately 85 corporate roles across various departments. Furthermore, the company recently rejected a takeover bid from Frasers Group Plc, led by billionaire Mike Ashley, citing a lack of clarity in Mulberry's commercial strategy and decision-making process.

Despite facing significant hurdles and a decline in share prices, Baldo's track record at Ganni, a popular Danish clothing brand, instills confidence in his ability to lead Mulberry through a period of transition. Under his leadership, Ganni experienced notable growth and success, expanding its international presence and capturing the attention of young consumers.

By focusing on affordability and repositioning Mulberry as a more accessible luxury brand, Baldo hopes to steer the company towards a path of sustainable growth and revitalization in the highly competitive fashion industry.
