Victoria’s Secret & Co. experienced a dramatic 28% plunge in its shares, marking a record decline for the lingerie maker. The company’s full-year sales guidance fell short of analyst expectations, causing investors to react swiftly to the news. Despite efforts to revitalize the brand and connect with customers, Victoria’s Secret’s struggles to stay relevant have been evident in its financial performance.

Analysts noted that the company’s promises to boost sales did not materialize, leading JP Morgan analyst Matthew Boss to downgrade the stock to underweight from neutral. Victoria’s Secret has been implementing various initiatives, such as a revamped fashion show and the expansion of its swim and apparel categories, in a bid to attract and retain customers. However, these efforts have yet to yield significant results.

In the quarter ending Feb. 3, which encompassed the crucial holiday shopping period, Victoria’s Secret saw a 6% decline in comparable sales. Despite this, the company exceeded profit expectations, largely due to better inventory management. While the international segment showed promising growth of around 24% in the fourth quarter, it remains a small portion of Victoria’s Secret’s overall business.

Chief Financial Officer TJ Johnson acknowledged that the most significant challenge lies in the trend of North American sales. CEO Martin Waters emphasized the competitive landscape during the holiday season, which led to more aggressive promotions compared to previous years. Looking ahead, Waters anticipates continued competitiveness in the current quarter, particularly in product categories like underwear where Victoria’s Secret has struggled to capture market share.

Analysts are casting doubt on the company’s ability to navigate these challenges successfully. BMO analyst Simeon Siegel highlighted the difficulty in the path to catalysts, urging a focus on management execution. With the stock having already fallen 26% over the past year, investor confidence in Victoria’s Secret’s turnaround efforts is waning. Amidst a tough market environment and fierce competition, the company faces an uphill battle to regain its footing and drive sustainable growth.
