In a bid to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption and bolster the infrastructure required for widespread use, Indian car manufacturers are ramping up the deployment of EV chargers. As the world's third-largest auto market gears up for the launch of new EV models this year, the government is also stepping in with incentives totaling $230 million for the installation of fast-charging stations.
Leading the charge is Tata Motors, the frontrunner in the Indian EV car market. The company has set an ambitious target of expanding the country's charging network to a whopping 400,000 points by 2027. This initiative will see Tata Motors collaborate with EV charger operators like Tata Power and Statiq to establish 30,000 new public charging points and roll out a verified 'Mega Charger' network across 500 locations within the next two years.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki, the largest player in India's overall car market, plans to install 1,500 EV chargers at its service stations and provide home installation services for these units. With a focus on convenience, the company aims to ensure that customers in the top 100 cities in India have access to an EV charger every 5-10 kilometers.
Hyundai Motor India is also making significant strides in expanding its EV charging infrastructure. By 2031, the company intends to have around 600 public fast-charging stations, up from the current count of approximately 50 as of the end of 2024. Hyundai offers its customers access to a network of around 10,000 charging points through partnerships with private operators like ChargeZone.
In the realm of EV charging, JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture between SAIC Motor and the JSW Group, stands out with a network of 1,559 EV chargers. The company has also partnered with state-owned fuel retailer HPCL to further enhance its charging facilities.
Moreover, government-owned fuel retailers like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum have collectively set up one of India's most extensive EV charging networks across over 18,000 locations. This concerted effort underscores the growing momentum towards sustainable transportation in India and paves the way for a cleaner, greener future powered by electric vehicles.
