Mounjaro, scientifically known as tirzepatide, is part of a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, designed to manage blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, these drugs aid in slowing digestion, leading to increased satiety and making them an attractive option for weight loss therapy. Alongside Eli Lilly's Mounjaro, Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic are also part of this cutting-edge class of treatments.

The expert committee's recommendation, as outlined in the June 19th notification, includes permission for the import and marketing of specific tirzepatide doses for chronic weight management. However, this approval comes with the condition that the firm conducts a Phase 4 clinical trial for post-marketing surveillance. The committee plays a vital role in advising India's drug regulatory authority on drug approvals and trials.

Sheetal Sapale, Vice President of research firm Pharmarack, highlighted the significance of the committee's recommendation, stating that it represents a crucial step towards approval. CEO David Ricks previously indicated that Lilly anticipated launching Mounjaro in India as soon as next year.

With India boasting the world's second-highest population of individuals with type 2 diabetes and escalating rates of obesity, the approval of Mounjaro holds immense promise for these health concerns. According to the World Obesity Federation Atlas, approximately 11% of Indian adults are projected to be obese by 2035. Furthermore, the global market for weight-loss drugs is forecasted to exceed $100 billion by the end of the decade.

In addition to the approval, the expert panel mandated that Lilly provides the necessary manufacturing and controls data for Mounjaro. The notification of this development was first brought to light by a local medical publication, The Indian Practitioner, signaling a positive step towards combatting diabetes and obesity in India.
