In the wake of the E. coli outbreak that hit McDonald's earlier this fall, the fast-food giant is actively working to win back customers who shied away following the food safety scare. While most customers continued to visit the chain, a small percentage stayed away, prompting McDonald's to devise new strategies to entice them back.

McDonald's US president, Joe Erlinger, revealed that the company is experimenting with different messages, offers, and deals targeted specifically at the customers who have been absent since the outbreak was disclosed on October 22. This initiative aims to reassure these hesitant diners and encourage their return to the restaurants.

The E. coli outbreak led to the temporary removal of the popular Quarter Pounder from menus after health authorities linked the contamination to fresh slivered onions. With the outbreak now declared over and a $100 million investment in customer retention underway, McDonald's is focusing on rebuilding trust and enticing customers with new value-driven initiatives like the McValue platform.

The McValue platform includes the $5 bundle and a buy-one-get-one-for-$1 deal, along with exclusive discounts for app users, offering a refreshed approach to value offerings. This comes as the chain shifts away from the previous menu with items priced as low as $1, a move that has become challenging due to inflation.

Erlinger emphasized that McDonald's aims to position itself as a value-driven destination, rather than being tied to specific price points, recognizing the financial strain many Americans are facing due to inflation. While acknowledging the current inflationary pressures, Erlinger noted a potential slowdown in the rate of price increases, highlighting the importance of adjusting to a new normal in consumer spending habits. McDonald's new strategy reflects a forward-looking approach to adapting to changing economic conditions and consumer preferences in the fast-food industry.
