In a surprising turn of events, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., scion of the prominent Democratic Kennedy family, has announced that he will be dropping out of the race for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination. Instead, he will be running as a third-party candidate, declaring his independence from both the Democratic Party and all other political parties. The 69-year-old attorney and activist made the announcement at a rally in Philadelphia, expressing the difficulty of letting go of the party that his family has been associated with for generations.

Although Kennedy's decision allows him a more certain path in the upcoming general election, qualifying for state ballots without the support of a party apparatus may prove challenging. Nevertheless, Kennedy joins a crowded field of notable figures aiming to challenge the two-party system, which seems poised to nominate President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump for a rematch of the 2020 election.

With the support of the American Values 2024 super political action committee, Kennedy's campaign has already raised approximately $17 million, and further contributions are expected following his official announcement. However, his independent candidacy, along with similar moves from other figures such as academic and progressive activist Cornel West and the centrist group No Labels, may face long odds. Nonetheless, any independent candidate has the potential to play a spoiler role in an unpredictable election, as the Electoral College system means that tipping the balance in just a few states could alter the outcome of a closely contested race.

Kennedy's lineage as the son of Robert F. Kennedy, the iconic former senator and US attorney general, adds weight to his decision to challenge Biden within the Democratic party. Kennedy encountered challenging circumstances, as Biden wielded his influence to alter party rules and favor his stronghold in South Carolina over potential appeal in New Hampshire, a state where Kennedy's libertarian-influenced New England liberalism might have resonated. His unique positions on various issues failed to align neatly within the Democratic party, resulting in a large portion of his support coming from Republican and independent voters.

While a recent poll by Messenger/HarrisX showed Biden leading Kennedy among Democratic voters, the same survey revealed that Republican and independent voters held a more favorable view of Kennedy compared to Biden. This suggests that Kennedy may have greater potential to expand his support beyond the Democratic party. In his speech, Kennedy touched on the frustrations and anger felt by Americans who believe they have been left behind, cheated, and belittled by an elite that has rigged the system in their favor.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) responded to the announcement by dismissing Kennedy as a "typical Democrat politician" attempting to deceive Republican voters. They claim that his candidacy will likely draw votes away from the Republican nominee. Kennedy, however, describes himself as pro-union, pro-environment, and anti-war, with some positions aligning more closely with the post-Trump Republican party. He has expressed vaccine skepticism, advocated for a more isolationist foreign policy, criticized tech company influence, and embraced cryptocurrencies.

Kennedy has not been without controversy, often espousing conspiracy theories about vaccines, gender dysphoria, AIDS, and the assassinations of his father and President Kennedy. Additionally, he has made anti-Semitic remarks, causing widespread condemnation, including from his wife, actress Cheryl Hines. Despite the controversies, some of Kennedy's supporters believe that his independent bid will work in his favor, viewing him as a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who can potentially win.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Kennedy's decision to run as an independent introduces another dynamic to an already complex race. While it remains uncertain how successful his bid will be, his campaign is sure to further stir the already tempestuous political landscape, offering voters a significant alternative to the established two-party system.
