Airbus SE's subsidiary, AALTO HAPS Ltd., is gearing up to revolutionize the communications industry by developing high altitude, solar-powered drones. These state-of-the-art aircraft, known as the Zephyr, have the ability to stay aloft for days at a time and will be deployed from multiple bases around the world. AALTO's CEO, Samer Halawi, announced that the first hub will be built in Kenya, with plans to commence commercial operations in the near future.

The Zephyr's main goal is to provide enhanced connectivity, mobile services, and earth observation capabilities from unprecedented altitudes. Operating approximately 20 kilometers above the Earth, AALTO's drones will be positioned in the stratospheric range. Although this altitude is lower than other satellite networks, such as Elon Musk's SpaceX, which operate around 550 kilometers above the Earth, AALTO's Zephyr can be launched whenever necessary. The company intends to sell its services primarily to mobile operators rather than individual customers.

One significant advantage of the Zephyr is its ability to substitute mobile phone towers in remote locations or during natural disasters. With its long flight capacity, potentially lasting up to 200 days, the Zephyr can provide uninterrupted connectivity when traditional infrastructure fails. Additionally, it boasts remote observation capabilities, allowing it to capture high-resolution video and images in near real-time. This feature makes it an invaluable tool for governments to monitor various situations, including forest fires, protests, borders, and instances of insecurity.

In choosing Kenya as its first outpost, AALTO HAPS Ltd. recognizes the country's favorable conditions for successful operations. The establishment of their hub is expected to generate around 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to local economic growth. Kenya's weather, wide open spaces, uncongested airspace, stable government, economic environment, and tech-savvy population make it an ideal location for AALTO's operations, according to Tom Guilfoy, the Vice President for AALTOPORT Operations.

The company plans to launch its Kenyan operations at the beginning of next year, with customer services commencing in the third quarter. AALTO has already engaged with local telecommunication giants Safaricom Plc and Telkom Kenya Ltd. to provide connectivity in remote areas accounting for approximately 3% of the country's land. They have also initiated discussions with Kenya's aviation, meteorological, and communications authorities, although they are still awaiting full regulatory approvals to commence operations.

AALTO's ambitious strategy involves manufacturing 50 to 75 Zephyr aircraft per year. These drones will be launched from specially designed ports, potentially around four or five locations. In Kenya, AALTO plans to establish an assembly line, maintenance facility, and network operating center, further boosting the local economy and job market. With its groundbreaking technology and commitment to overcoming communication challenges, AALTO HAPS Ltd. is poised to make a significant impact on the industry and pave the way for future innovation.
