In response to a surge in unsustainable net migration, New Zealand has announced significant changes to its visa rules, tightening requirements for the Accredited Employer Worker Visa (AEWV) scheme. The country aims to prioritize the local labor market and reduce the risk of displacing New Zealanders from job opportunities. Minister of Immigration, Erica Stanford, highlighted the need to strike a balance between addressing skill shortages and ensuring that New Zealanders are given priority for available jobs.

Effective immediately, the updated AEWV scheme introduces new criteria such as a minimum English language proficiency standard and a requirement for a minimum level of skills through work experience or qualifications. Additionally, the maximum continuous stay on an AEWV has been shortened to three years. These changes aim to ensure that migrants meet specific qualifications and skills before being employed, and to hold employers accountable for confirming that no suitable New Zealander was overlooked for a job opportunity.

Employers will now be required to advertise job openings for at least 21 days and provide justification for not selecting any New Zealander applicants. This increased transparency aims to ensure that local talent is considered and prioritized before hiring migrant workers. While certain sectors, such as transportation and care, may be exempt from some of these new requirements, the overall goal is to strengthen the local labor market and foster opportunities for New Zealand citizens.

As New Zealand grapples with the challenges posed by high levels of migration, these updated visa rules mark a significant shift in immigration policy. By implementing stricter language and skill criteria, along with shorter work permit durations, the government is taking proactive steps to safeguard the interests of local workers and address the evolving needs of the labor market. These changes signal a more stringent approach to managing migration flows and underscore the country's commitment to balancing economic growth with the protection of its domestic workforce.
