Mercedes-Benz AG has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first international auto brand to receive approval to conduct advanced autonomous driving trials in Beijing. This approval allows Mercedes to test its Level 4 self-driving capabilities on both highways and urban roads in the Chinese capital. This level of autonomy enables the vehicle to handle all driving tasks within specific conditions, with the option for human intervention when necessary. Activities to be tested include parking, reversing, and executing left turns in busy traffic without requiring driver input.
The race to develop autonomous driving technology is heating up in China's competitive auto market, with manufacturers viewing it as a key differentiator to attract customers and gain a competitive advantage. Tesla Inc. is also working on bringing its advanced driver-assistance technology, Full Self-Driving, to China, having obtained testing approval in certain areas of Shanghai. Similarly, General Motors Co. was granted permission last year to conduct trials of self-driving Cadillacs in Shanghai.
Beyond traditional automakers, technology companies like Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo and Baidu Inc.'s Apollo Go are focusing on developing autonomous taxi services as the future of transportation. These companies are actively testing driverless vehicles on the streets of various cities, including San Francisco and Wuhan.
While Chinese regulations currently limit advanced driver-assistance systems to Level 2 automation, which requires continuous human monitoring and hands-on steering wheel control, the approval granted to Mercedes-Benz for Level 4 autonomous driving trials signals a significant step towards the future of autonomous mobility in Beijing and beyond.
