Top executives of Denizbank AS, a Turkish bank, are under investigation in connection with a high-profile fraud case involving prominent footballers, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In an interview on his way back from the United Arab Emirates, Erdogan revealed that investigations are underway, although he did not provide further details or mention any specific names.
The investigation stems from a recent court case involving a Denizbank branch manager who orchestrated a Ponzi scheme, defrauding famous football players, including former Barcelona and Inter Milan players, of $44 million. The manager enticed the players with the promise of unrealistic returns on their investments. Initially, bags of cash were handed to the manager, but as the scheme grew rapidly, repayments became unsustainable, leading to the eventual collapse of the fraudulent operation.
President Erdogan emphasized that Turkey is a state of law, and investigations are currently underway regarding the bank's top executives. Denizbank, a local unit of Emirates NBD Bank PJSC, has yet to respond to requests for comment.
The court documents provide a detailed account of illicit activities involving the exchange of large sums of cash in inconspicuous locations, shedding light on the sophisticated nature of the operation that ensnared unsuspecting investors.
Erdogan cautioned citizens against falling into the traps of fraudsters who promise quick high profits and easy money. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and avoiding fraudulent schemes that seem too good to be true.
Denizbank has previously stated that it was unaware of these fraudulent transactions until a customer complaint was made in April. The bank conducted initial investigations, which showed no evidence of any banking crimes.
As the investigations continue, it remains to be seen how this high-profile fraud case will unfold and whether it will have any wider implications for Denizbank and the Turkish banking sector as a whole.
