In a significant development, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval to Jazz Pharmaceuticals for their drug Ziihera, designed for the treatment of metastatic HER2-positive biliary tract cancer in previously treated adults. Ziihera, whose active ingredient is zanidatamab-hrii, has shown promising results in a mid-stage study with an impressive objective response rate of 52%.
HER2, a protein linked to rapid cancer cell growth, is commonly found in various solid tumor forms, including biliary tract cancer. Jazz Pharmaceuticals Chief Medical Officer, Rob Iannone, expressed optimism about the potential of zanidatamab in treating HER2-expressing solid tumors, aiming to enhance outcomes for patients struggling with these challenging HER2-positive cancers.
The drug, developed in collaboration with Beigene, marks a significant milestone for Jazz Pharmaceuticals following their acquisition of exclusive rights from Zymeworks in 2022. While the FDA's accelerated approval paves the way for immediate availability of Ziihera, the company acknowledges the occurrence of serious adverse reactions in a portion of patients, primarily manifested as diarrhea, infusion-related reactions, abdominal pain, and fatigue.
Moreover, the accelerated approval status is conditional upon the drug demonstrating clinical benefits in further confirmatory trials. Jazz Pharmaceuticals remains committed to ongoing research and development efforts with the aim of expanding the use of zanidatamab in biliary tract cancer and other HER2-positive malignancies, with the ultimate goal of providing more effective treatment options for those affected by these challenging cancers.
