In a strategic move to tap into Japan's evolving electric vehicle (EV) market, Stellantis NV has introduced its fully electric compact utility car, the Jeep Avenger, with a starting price of ¥5.8 million ($40,000). This launch positions Stellantis to compete in a market where foreign imports are gradually gaining ground on EVs from domestic automakers.

Despite gasoline and hybrid cars maintaining popularity among Japanese consumers, the EV market is steadily expanding. In 2023, imported EV sales surpassed domestically manufactured EVs, with a total of 22,800 units sold compared to approximately 21,000 units from local brands like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda.

Toyota's ambitious plan to sell 1.5 million battery electric vehicles annually by 2026 and 3.5 million by 2030 has faced adjustments due to changing market dynamics. The company recently revised its EV sales target for 2026 to 1 million units, aligning with the shift in industry trends.

Chinese automaker BYD Co. has also been making progress in the Japanese market, albeit at a slower pace. Its Seal flagship sedan, priced at ¥5.28 million, emerged as the top-selling imported EV in August, with 196 units sold. This highlights the increasing competition and diversification within Japan's evolving EV landscape.
