With the production of Dodge's V8 muscle cars coming to an end, the automaker's engineers wanted the final non-electric Dodge Challenger to make a statement. And make a statement it did, with the unveiling of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170, which produces 1,025 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in just under 1.7 seconds under ideal circumstances. To aid in drag-strip stops, buyers can opt for a parachute mounting system, which is sold separately under Dodge's Direct Connection brand and designed to bolt onto the back of the car.

The Demon 170 is quicker than some high-performance all-wheel-drive electric cars and features a supercharger that produces much higher pressures than the ones used on the already-powerful Dodge Hellcat SRT Demon model. The engine has been the subject of much development testing, as engineers needed to ensure that the inside parts stay inside and not outside, given the engine's massive cylinder pressures.

The Demon 170 is part of a series of Last Call special edition Dodge Challenger and four-door Dodge Charger models that Stellantis is producing to mark the end of these V8-powered models. Both cars will go out of production at the end of this year, and prices for the Demon 170 will start at $96,666. Production will be limited to a maximum of 3,300 units, with 3,000 for the United States and 300 for Canada. A gas guzzler tax is expected to be added to the price, which could amount to $7,700. A convertible version of the Challenger is also available during its last model year. Once the Brampton, Ontario, Canada factory shuts down at the end of the year, production of the Demon 170 will cease, even if all 3,300 cars haven't been built.

Dodge is already working on a new, fully electric muscle car, set to be available in 2024.
