Fast food giant McDonald's has announced that it will be discontinuing its McCafé bakery lineup, which includes popular items like apple fritters, blueberry muffins, and cinnamon rolls. The decision comes less than three years after the introduction of these baked goods, signaling a shift in the company's menu offerings.
McDonald's stated that it is always attentive to its customers' preferences and is constantly adjusting its menu accordingly. It appears that the bakery items may not have been drawing in the same level of demand as they once did. The chain emphasized that it still offers a range of other sweet treats, such as chocolate chip cookies and apple pies, as alternative options for customers with a sweet tooth.
The bakery lineup was initially introduced in October 2020 as a way to rejuvenate breakfast sales, which had been declining. McDonald's faced increased competition from rival chains like Wendy's and had to adapt to changing consumer habits during the height of the pandemic, as many people were working from home and altering their morning routines.
However, McDonald's breakfast sales have rebounded in recent quarters as people have gradually returned to their offices and resumed their pre-pandemic routines. This may have contributed to the decision to discontinue the bakery lineup.
Interestingly, this announcement comes at a time when McDonald's has expanded its partnership with Krispy Kreme to sell donuts at nearly 200 locations in Kentucky. This move was somewhat unexpected, considering McDonald's had been selling its own baked goods. The collaboration was aimed at attracting new customers during the morning hours, which have remained steady for the fast food giant. It is worth noting that lunch and dinner sales have experienced a decline due to rising menu prices, according to market research firm NDP Group.
This decision could potentially be advantageous for Krispy Kreme, as the popular donut chain has fewer locations and is looking to expand its presence in the United States. Krispy Kreme follows a hub-and-spoke model, producing donuts at its stores and bakeries and then distributing them to third-party locations such as convenience stores. This strategy helps to bolster Krispy Kreme's business and increase its customer reach.
As McDonald's bids farewell to its bakery lineup, it will continue to focus on its core menu offerings and explore new ways to adapt to evolving consumer preferences and habits.
