Salesforce Inc. is expanding its reach and cutting down on costs by partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to sell its most popular apps on the AWS Marketplace. This move allows Salesforce customers to make "self-service" purchases and pay using credits on the AWS platform, simplifying the integration of AWS data into Salesforce products and enhancing the use of generative AI tools.

By listing its apps on the AWS Marketplace, Salesforce aims to generate more sales without relying heavily on sales representatives, thus reducing labor costs. Brian Millham, the company's Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the importance of pursuing such sales avenues to reduce expenses. Salesforce is also considering other channel-sales opportunities and potential partnerships with major cloud platforms like Microsoft's Azure or Google Cloud.

The AWS Marketplace, with its extensive customer base, provides a significant advantage to Salesforce. Amazon purports its marketplace as a means for companies to reach hundreds of thousands of customers. However, critics liken it to a tollbooth, questioning the value it adds between software firms and their customers.

Salesforce's decision to list on the AWS Marketplace stems from its existing reliance on AWS for most of its cloud computing needs. This symbiotic relationship enables Salesforce to leverage AWS's support and infrastructure while simultaneously expanding its customer base.

Companies opting to utilize the AWS Marketplace can avail themselves of various incentives. For instance, by signing a multi-year agreement with AWS, businesses may qualify for discounts on AWS products if they commit to a minimum spending quota. Purchases made through the marketplace count toward fulfilling that quota.

Salesforce will offer its customer relationship management and support request applications, along with Tableau, MuleSoft, and other popular products on the AWS Marketplace. However, notable absence includes the workplace messaging app Slack, attributed to a billing system misalignment, according to Salesforce Executive Vice President Patrick Stokes.

With this collaboration, Salesforce aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for its customers while expanding its market reach. As the partnership takes shape, Salesforce may further explore similar agreements with other major cloud platforms, emphasizing its commitment to providing innovative and seamless solutions to a broader customer base.
