In a surprising move that showcases her entrepreneurial spirit, global icon Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has made her mark in the liquor industry by teaming up with Moët Hennessy, a subsidiary of luxury powerhouse LVMH, to launch a new American whisky called SirDavis.
Priced at $89 a bottle, SirDavis is a unique blend of 51% rye and 49% malted barley, crafted under the expert guidance of master distiller Bill Lumsden, famed for his exceptional work with Scotland's esteemed Glenmorangie and Ardbeg distilleries.
Inspired by the story of her paternal great-grandfather, Davis Hogue, a resourceful moonshine maker during Prohibition in the American South, Beyoncé found a deep-rooted connection to the whisky-making world. Learning about Hogue's practice of hiding whisky bottles in the knots of cedar trees for loved ones to discover added a layer of destiny to her foray into the whisky market. A poignant line from her song "Bodyguard" off her recent country album evokes this sentiment with the words, "Wheels in the gravel, Davis in my bones."
In a nod to her Houston heritage, the production of SirDavis will take place in Texas, where the whisky will be finished, blended, and bottled. The design of the glass bottle, featuring a striking horse medallion, pays homage to the Lone Star State. Scheduled for release in September in the US, as well as in key global cities like London, Paris, and Tokyo, SirDavis is poised to make waves in the whisky scene.
Interestingly, Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z, also has ties to the alcohol industry through his LVMH-owned brand, Armand de Brignac Champagne, further solidifying the power couple's presence in the luxury liquor market.
Celebrity-owned alcohol labels have been gaining momentum in recent years, with successes like George Clooney's Casamigos tequila and Ryan Reynolds' Aviation gin, both of which were acquired by Diageo Plc for substantial sums. From Bruno Mars' venture into rum to Cate Blanchett's creative role with a sake brand, stars are leveraging their personal brands to leave a mark in the spirits world.
This collaboration with LVMH isn't Beyoncé's first brush with the luxury conglomerate, as she previously starred in Tiffany ads and played a significant role in the Paris Olympics as she introduced Team USA, an event sponsored by LVMH.
While LVMH has experienced a slowdown in sales growth in the luxury sector in the last quarter, as high-end consumers tighten their purse strings on luxury goods like handbags and champagne, Beyoncé's entry into the whisky market with SirDavis brings a fresh perspective and a promising new venture to the esteemed brand collaboration.
