The DASH diet (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) secured second place, while the MIND diet (Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay) claimed the third spot on the list of 30 diets. All three diets are plant-based and emphasize the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and seeds.

The panel of 43 nutritional experts also evaluated the vegan diet for the first time, which earned third place in the best plant-based diets category. Other newly assessed diets included the Dukan diet (28th out of 30 best overall diets), the Herbalife Nutrition diet (29th), the HMR (Health Management Resources) diet (21st), and its sister brand, the Profile Plan (19th). The Plantstrong diet, formerly known as the Engine 2 diet, ranked 15th in the best overall diet category.

Gretel Schueller, Managing Editor of Health at U.S. News & World Report, emphasized the importance of reliable information in the overwhelming world of diet and nutrition. The rankings aim to provide users with a comprehensive evaluation of diets based on nutritional completeness, ease of adherence, and promotion of long-term healthy lifestyles.

So, what exactly is the Mediterranean style of eating? Numerous studies have shown that this diet can reduce the risk of various health conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, dementia, memory loss, depression, and even breast cancer. The Mediterranean diet is more of an eating style than a restrictive diet and is characterized by simple, plant-based cooking.

The majority of each meal in the Mediterranean diet consists of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, and seeds. Additionally, nuts and extra-virgin olive oil play a significant role in this eating pattern, while fats like butter are consumed sparingly, if at all. Sugar and refined foods are reserved for occasional indulgences.

Red meat is used sparingly, mainly for flavoring purposes, while the diet encourages the consumption of healthy, oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Eggs, dairy, and poultry are consumed in smaller portions compared to the typical Western diet.

In addition to food choices, the Mediterranean style of eating emphasizes social interactions during meals and regular exercise. Sharing meals with family and friends, practicing mindful eating, and engaging in physical activity are integral components of this lifestyle.

Interestingly, the lowest-ranked diet on the list of 30 best overall diets was the raw food diet. While it promotes the consumption of uncooked and unprocessed food, experts raise concerns about its nutritional adequacy and safety. Cooking certain foods enhances variety and increases the intake of essential nutrients, according to Dr. Vanita Rahman, an internal medicine physician and clinic director. The safer and healthier way to incorporate raw foods into a diet is as part of a whole foods, plant-based eating plan that includes cooked lentils, beans, grains, and vegetables.

While the ketogenic diet, or keto, captured the top spot in the best fast weight-loss category, it ranked 25th overall. However, experts caution against its long-term sustainability due to its highly restrictive nature. Many individuals who attempt the keto diet end up discontinuing it, as it can be challenging to adhere to. Registered dietitian Amanda Sauceda highlights that often, people are not strictly following a keto diet but simply adhering to a low-carb approach.

Furthermore, the keto diet is unsuitable for individuals with heart, liver, and kidney conditions, certain types of cancer, as well as children who have not received professional guidance for weight loss. A 2023 review of studies also raises concerns about potential cognitive decline, nutritional deficiencies, kidney stones, heart disease, and muscle loss associated with prolonged adherence to the keto diet.

In conclusion, the Mediterranean diet continues to be celebrated as the best overall diet for the seventh year in a row, earning accolades for its nutritional completeness, ease of following, and promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Its emphasis on plant-based foods, whole grains, and healthy fats contributes to reducing the risk of various health conditions. As always, it is essential to consult with healthcare professionals before making any drastic dietary changes.
