Passengers arriving at major UK airports were left frustrated over the weekend due to a nationwide border system issue. The problem affected electronic gates used for passport control, leading to long queues and delays for many travelers. The issue was compounded by the fact that a public holiday was approaching and many schools were also on half-term breaks, resulting in a higher number of people traveling. As a result of the system failure, passengers were required to go through manual passport checks instead of using the electronic gates.

A spokesperson for the Home Office acknowledged the issue and stated that they are working to resolve it as soon as possible. They indicated that they are communicating with port operators and airlines to minimize the disruption for travelers. London's Heathrow Airport disclosed that this issue was not specific to their airport and was affecting a range of ports of entry.

Lucy Morton, from the Immigration Services Union, stated that depending on the airport, 60% to 80% of travelers go through e-gates and this system failure will build queues. Although the delay will not have any impact on national security, it will create additional frustration for travellers.

She also added that such delays increase the likelihood of verbal and even physical abuse against the staff as passengers become frustrated with the delays. Over time, such frustration may escalate, leading to potentially confrontational situations. This can create a hostile environment, with negative implications for passengers and staff alike.

Overall, the nationwide border system issue caused chaos and inconvenience for passengers. Nevertheless, authorities are working to address the problem and restore normal operations as soon as possible.
