Verrica Pharmaceuticals Inc. has earned approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its innovative treatment for molluscum contagiosum, a common viral skin infection affecting both adults and children ages 2 and above. This milestone marks the first approved treatment for this condition in the United States.

Previously, Verrica had faced challenges in obtaining the FDA's green light for its drug, Ycanth. However, with this recent approval, the company can now bring the treatment to market. Ycanth is unique in that it is delivered through a single-use applicator, ensuring precise topical dosing and targeted administration.

Although pricing details for Ycanth have not been disclosed, Verrica has announced that the drug will be commercially available by September 2023. Analyst Serge Belanger from Needham estimates that each applicator could be priced around $500 and predicts peak sales to reach approximately $200 million.

Molluscum contagiosum, caused by a poxvirus, leads to the development of skin lesions that typically resolve within a year, leaving no scars. However, in some cases, the condition may persist for longer periods. It is estimated that around six million people, predominantly children, are affected by the condition in the United States alone, and until now, no approved treatments were available.

The effectiveness of Verrica's treatment was demonstrated in two late-stage studies, where approximately half of the patients using the drug achieved complete clearance of all treatable molluscum lesions over the course of twelve weeks, far outperforming the placebo group.

In addition to molluscum contagiosum, Verrica is also currently conducting late-stage trials for Ycanth's potential use in treating common warts and external genital warts. This approval marks a significant achievement for Verrica Pharmaceuticals and opens doors for further advancements in dermatological treatments.
