Air passengers in Europe experienced significant delays on Monday as the UK's air traffic control system encountered a "technical issue," leading to restrictions on flights. The disruption occurred on one of the busiest travel days during the summer season, causing frustration among stranded travelers. The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) in the UK resolved the fault after an extended period of disruption earlier in the day.

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, NATS confirmed that it had identified and rectified the technical issue affecting its flight planning system. The organization reassured passengers that it was working closely with airlines and airports to manage the affected flights as efficiently as possible. Engineers will continue to monitor the system's performance as operations gradually return to normal.

Unfortunately, the incident occurred during the final day of a summer public holiday weekend in the UK, inconveniencing many vacationers. NATS acknowledged this impact and pledged to collaborate with airlines and airports to minimize the disruption caused to travelers. Throughout the day, frustrated passengers sought updates from airlines while waiting for their flights to be rescheduled.

The flight planning issue specifically affected the system's automatic processing of flight plans, forcing a manual processing approach that is unable to handle the same volume. Consequently, traffic flow restrictions were implemented to manage the situation. NATS emphasized that their priority was always the safety of every flight in the UK and expressed sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. Passengers were advised to contact their airlines directly for information on how their flights would be affected.

The disruption led to photographs being shared on social media by affected passengers. One traveler captured an image of fellow passengers waiting at Pisa Airport due to flight delays, while another shared a picture of the departures board at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol showing multiple canceled flights destined for the UK.

London's Heathrow Airport, one of Europe's busiest aviation hubs, confirmed that schedules to all UK airports were likely to be affected. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines directly for updates. Gatwick Airport reported some delays but clarified that it was not a major issue at the moment. The airport's control tower communicated with planes, and cancellations were anticipated.

Manchester Airport in northern England informed passengers that a nationwide air traffic control issue was affecting flights across the country. The airport was operating as normal, but disruptions were possible. Travelers were urged to verify their flight status with their respective airlines.

Meanwhile, Logan Air, a UK airline serving mainly Scotland, highlighted the network-wide failure of the UK air traffic control’s computer systems. The airline hoped to minimize disruptions for intra-Scotland flights through local coordination but expected significant impact on north-south and international flights.

Ireland's air traffic control service provider, AirNav, announced significant delays for flights traveling within UK airspace. Flights between Ireland and UK airports, as well as those transiting through UK airspace, were affected. Passengers were advised to contact their airlines for information on the status of their flights as there was no certainty regarding when operations would return to normal.
