BMW AG has unveiled its first prototype of the upcoming electric vehicle (EV) lineup, marking a new chapter in its battle to catch up with Tesla Inc. and safeguard its sales in China, its most important market. The prototype, named Vision Neue Klasse, displays BMW's dedicated EV platform, which is set to launch around 2025 – just as Mercedes-Benz prepares to introduce its new range of EVs. Volkswagen AG, on the other hand, has experienced delays in launching its own EV architecture, causing setbacks for Porsche and Audi.

BMW is breaking away from its long-standing tradition of advertising performance-focused "ultimate driving machines" with the sleek coupe concept. Instead, the focus is on advanced digital features, including a wide windshield display and software capable of processing voice commands and hand gestures. This development caters to the preferences of Chinese consumers who have shown a greater inclination towards local brands like BYD Co. and Nio Inc., which offer EVs with cutting-edge gadgets tailored to their tastes.

Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, stated that the Neue Klasse sets the company's direction for the forthcoming decades. Chinese consumers have traditionally favored BMW, Mercedes, and Audi for their premium combustion-engine vehicles, but they have fallen behind due to China's rapid shift towards EVs. BYD recently surpassed VW as China's best-selling automaker, while Mercedes had to reduce prices for its flagship electric sedan in response to lackluster sales. With electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles expected to dominate 90% of the world's largest auto market by the end of the decade, the pressure is mounting for Western luxury brands to accelerate their EV offerings. Tesla's price war in China has further escalated the situation.

Despite facing challenges, BMW has witnessed growth in China, particularly with its electric cars, and remains unaffected by the price war due to its position in the premium segment. Zipse assured that the Neue Klasse will be even more profitable than the brand's existing lineup of electric vehicles. The top-end Neue Klasse models are projected to have a range of up to 800 kilometers and a rapid charging capability of reaching 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes. Although these figures might not make them the best in class, BMW aims to differentiate itself by offering a more enjoyable driving experience at higher speeds.

While prioritizing digital features, BMW is not abandoning its traditional brand values. Zipse reiterated the company's belief in making a difference in the dynamics of the drivetrain, implying that the Neue Klasse will offer a thrilling driving experience compared to its competitors. A recent consumer survey conducted by AlixPartners revealed that BMW ranks second in terms of tech features in China, trailing behind Geely's brand Zeekr but surpassing Xpeng, Tesla, and VW.

Overall, BMW's unveiling of the Vision Neue Klasse indicates the company's determination to compete against Tesla and Chinese automakers in the evolving EV market, particularly in China. The combination of advanced digital features and BMW's reputation for driving dynamics positions the Neue Klasse as a strong contender in the future of electric mobility.
