German pharmaceutical company Bayer has announced a voluntary recall of one lot of its cancer drug, Vitrakvi, in the United States due to the presence of microbial contamination. The contamination was discovered during routine stability testing, although the company has reassured the public that no adverse events related to the lot have been reported thus far. Vitrakvi is typically prescribed for patients with advanced solid tumor cancers who possess a rare gene mutation.

Bayer has identified the source of the contamination as Penicillium brevicompactum, a slow-growing fungus. The company has stated that there is a reasonable probability that ingesting the fungus, especially for patients who are already immunocompromised, could lead to invasive fungal infections in the blood or potentially life-threatening pneumonia.

The recalled lot of Vitrakvi consists of 192 100ml glass bottles of the oral solution form of the drug. However, Bayer has assured patients that there should be no disruption in accessing the medication as a result of the recall. The affected lot was distributed to wholesalers and specialty pharmacies in the U.S. between January 3 and February 13 of this year. Bayer notified these distributors of the recall on November 8. Patients in possession of the recalled lot are advised to immediately discontinue its use and contact their physician or healthcare provider.

The recall of the affected lot has been carried out in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The impacted lot has an expiration date of February 29, 2024. Bayer urges customers in possession of the specific lot to adhere to the recall instructions and seek guidance from their healthcare professionals.

It is essential to note that this recall is specific to one lot of Vitrakvi and does not affect other lots of the drug. The recall was initiated as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of patients.
