A recent study conducted by a research team in Hangzhou, China, suggests that consuming fried foods, especially fried potatoes, on a frequent basis may increase the risk of anxiety and depression. The study evaluated 140,728 people over the course of 11.3 years and found that those who ate fried foods had a 12% higher risk of anxiety and a 7% higher risk of depression than those who did not eat fried foods. The link was more pronounced among young men and younger consumers.
While fried foods are known risk factors for obesity, high blood pressure, and other health issues, these findings suggest that reducing fried food consumption may also benefit mental health. However, nutrition experts caution that the results are preliminary and that it is not entirely clear whether the fried foods caused mental health issues or whether people experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety turned to comfort foods as a way of self-medicating.
It is also worth noting that unhealthy food and poor nutrition can lower one's mood and exacerbate mental health conditions, as found in a prior study cited within this new one. The researchers suggest that acrylamide, a chemical formed during the frying process, especially in fried potatoes, may be to blame for the higher risk of anxiety and depression.
In a separate paper referenced in the study, the researchers exposed zebrafish to acrylamide and found that long-term exposure caused the fish to display signs of heightened anxiety, such as spending more time in dark zones and reduced ability to socialize with their species.
While the results of the study are preliminary, they do indicate that maintaining a healthy lifestyle and reducing consumption of fried foods could be beneficial for both physical and mental health. The researchers also point out the recent rise of depression and anxiety worldwide, with 2020 seeing an increase of 27.6% and 25.6%, respectively, and suggest that diet may be a factor worth considering.
It is important to note that the study does not necessarily mean that people should completely eliminate fried foods from their diet, but rather that they should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Overall, the study underscores the importance of a varied and wholesome diet in promoting both physical and mental well-being.
